What is Leadership?
The Leadership Development industry is a multi-billion-dollar business, with thousands of models, theories, books, articles and research papers on the topic.
I see leadership, first and foremost, as the ability to lead oneself first, and influence and lead others second.
Leadership, in my view, must also have an altruistic component. The intention to serve the greater good of humanity, so therefore compassion and courage are key.
True leaders, are capable of creating a clear vision, and then engaging and guiding people so that the vision can be delivered. They care about their people as much as they care for their cause and goals.
We can find incredible leaders in several contexts, including workplaces, communities, religious contexts, politics and many other areas.
Greta Thunberg is an outstanding leader who I admire for all the obvious reasons.
Lastly, it’s crucial to distinguish leadership from management, as Peter Drucker said – “Leadership is about doing the right thing, while managing is about doing things right”.
